Pottery lessons

I’ve been having pottery lessons with the lovely Marieanne of Caterham Creations. Her studio is at the end of her garden (where her hens roam) under a damson tree, it’s packed with pretty works in progress. An expert in clay, she’s super friendly and patient. At only £10 an hour, all materials included, her one to one lessons are highly recommended.

I’ve had lessons in ceramics before, both in the basics and in throwing – but class sizes were big and I was disappointed with the results. I’d only used traditional earthy glazes before, so Marieanne’s huge selection of bold colours was really exciting. I was like a kid in a sweet shop! It was also a great use for my huge collection of rubber stamps – the results were way more exciting than using them on paper!

The best bit is having to wait until they’re fired to see the results. It’s better than Christmas seeing the shiny vibrant colours at last, and they have a great tactile dimension. I added ribbons and buttons to make my pieces into hanging charms for windows or doors. I’m waiting for another batch to be fired – will post more pictures when they’re done!
